After Hong-Kong, it is the arrival at Heathrow airport and finally a train to St Andrews from London. Arrival in St Andrews at about 5pm. First thing to do: turn on the heating. Second: have a shower. Third: to go to bed.

It is the last message posted on this blog. The pictures taken during this trip will be soon available here.

It is the end of my 3 week stay in Australia : leaving this morning to the airport, flying to Hong-Kong.

04/04/2009 Sydney

On Saturday morning, departure to the city centre:
(i) first stop on a Chinese garden; relaxing and peaceful place
(ii) visit of the botanic garden on the East side of the Sydney opera; view of a succulent garden with a large variety of cactus; an other blackout in Sydney city centre during about 2 hours (I am not to blame for that ...)
(iii) leaving Sydney on a ferry to Manly beach (North-East of Sydney): this is a surfer beach

After a meeting at 10am and a day spend to summarise the project that we have developed, it is Friday afternoon: first going to the pub after work and then resume the day in an Indian restaurant (BYO).

02/04/2009 Sydney

Taking a rest before the week-end and the long journey back to Scotland.

01/04/2009 Sydney

No April fool ... With several colleagues, we resume the day at the pub for diner (wednesday special: steack and mashed potato for 10 dollars!) and to watch the Australian football team in the qualifying round for the world cup 2010.

A day at work and a washing machine: nothing exciting

30/03/2009 Sydney

After work, I am going to the city centre to visit Hyde Park ( a small but more exotic park than the original one in London) and the botanic garden. This is a mess in town due to a blackout in the centre affecting traffic lights, shops, lifts, ...

29/03/2009 Katoomba

I continue to explore the Blue Mountains. I am going for a hike along the cliff from Katoomba to Leuna. It is a 3 hour trail. Then I take the trasin back to Sydney in the afternoon.

28/03/2009 Katoomba

It's the week-end. My plan is to go to visit the mountains on the West of Sydney: the Blue Mountains. I take the train at 9:00 am to reach Katoomba at 11:00am. Just the time to find a room for the night and have a quick lunch, I am off in the mountains: Katoomba is located at the top of the Blue Mountains. I first start with the world most-inclined train (and I can really believe them!) going down the cliff; I then have a tour of the rain forest, and back to the top on a cable-car : the views of the rain forest and the three sisters are astonishing. I continue my journey with a 3hour walk along the cliff and in the rain forest.

I gave an outstanding talk, as usual, in front of anaudience of astronomers. As an old british tradition, we resume the day at the pub in te city center, and then we go for a fine dinner in a restaurant. The food is good, the wine too, and the evening finished quite late...

26/03/2009 Sydney

A good day of work with stimulating results, and a dinner at the pub watching a game of Australian football.

25/03/2009 Sydney

A short walk to the Wentworth parc near my hotel. And preparing my talk for Friday.

24/03/2009 Sydney

Retour au boulot et au calme. Le temps de se rafraîchir un peu ... Il fait que 25 degrés à Sydney.

Back to work and for a quiet time. Just the time to cool down a bit... It is only 25 degrees in Sydney.

23/03/2009 Sydney

Flight from Cairns airport at 9:55 am and arriving at 01:50 pm (there is one hour jetlag between Cairns and Sydney). In the afternoon: rest and washing machine. Nothing really exiting indeed.

Eh oui ! encore debout à l'aube.

Another day to start before dawn. Today, I am going to visit the rain forest. The trip is divided into two parts with a break in the city of Kuranda, north of Cairns.

1st part: scenic train from Cairns to Kuranda through the rain forest including a short stop at the Barron falls. The trip is just 1 hour and a half for few kilometers. The views are magnificent.

Break in Kuranda: the town is known for the ancient market with local products, the butterfly parc and the koala parc. I visited the koala's parc where you can see koalas, kangourous, wallabies, crocodiles, snakes and (longneck) turtles. Local dish: snake stew (I went for the chicken burger ...)

2nd part: above the rain forest in cable car with two stops to see the trees and ferns. The pictures show the river in Kuranda, the canopy and some emergents, the Barron falls.

Again, I have to wake up early... I need to be at the marina to catch the fast boat to the great barrier reef! After just one hour and a half, we get there, at the Moore reef in the outer reef. The program of the day on the pontin: (1) snorkelling to observe the reef, (2) take a glass-bottom boat to the other parts of the reef.
(1) I have seen plenty of fish, turtles and reef; between 2 and 8 meter deep; fantastic.
(2) different sort of reef and a wide variety of fish; astonishing

Unfortunately, I do not have much pictures as it is under the water.

5:30 am in the morning: leaving my hotel to Sydney domestic airport ; my flight is schedule for departure to Cairns at 7:10 am and arrival time at about 9:30 am. Temperature at 9:30 am: 32 degrees Celsius. First things to do to survive: high-level sun protection, carrying lots of fresh drinks, and buy a hat. After checking in at the hotel, I visit the city of Cairns. This is a nice and charming city next to the ocean. I also book my trip for the next day (see next message ...) and I find a resting spot in a shadow.

Yet again, a hard day of work, fortunately tomorrow is already the week-end. Despite a network failure at the University of St Andrews, everything seems to work well, even my numerical code seems to converge.

18/03/2009 Sydney

Work, and a dinner in a pub with some colleagues (tasting the products of Australian breweries) ... After the pub, I prepared my trip to Cairns for the week-end.

17/03/2009 Sydney

After a day of hard work, it is time to walk to the city centre. I decided to follow Pitt Street which goes from the central station to the harbour. Once the crowdy centre and the asian quarter are crossed, there is a nice and quiet area near by the Circular Quay. Below are a view of the walkway along the harbour (left), the Sydney Opera House (centre), and the Harbour bridge (right).

16/03/2009 Sydney

After a well deserved night sleep to recover from the jetlag, I go to the University of Sydney in the Physics and Astronomy building. It is just a short walk of 15 min from my hotel. Contrary to St Andrews, the umbrella is not really useful. It is 20 degrees Celsius at 9am and no chance of rain. I finished work at 6pm, and after a nice dinner in a thai restaurant, I walked down to Blackwattle Bay (see pictures)

As it is in the Southern hemisphere, in the following I will rotate the images by 180 degrees.

Finally, I arrived in Sydney after a 24h trip. I still have plenty of time to go through the custom, pick up my luggage and reach the hotel. I take the train from the international airport to the central railway station. I continue my journey by taking the light train (tram lane) to Glebe where my hotel is situated. This is not the shortest route to the hotel but it is nice and quiet. Once at the hotel, a shower is very welcome after 36h!

14/03/2009 Somewhere

Nothing exciting: just watching movies and sleeping. I arrived at Hong-Kong airport at about 6pm local time and my connecting flight to my final destination is at 10pm.

13/03/2009 London

After a very interesting and motivating one-day meeting at Burlington House, I now arrived at Heathrow international airport (terminal 3). I will first fly to Hong-Kong on the 22:00 flight.
